"I always forgot about God"
Shane Logan was a successful businessman in Northern Ireland. Then trouble and failure hit him – and God stepped in.
I am now 46 and have been a Christian for about six years.
At the age of 39, by worldly standards my cup overflowed. I was married to a lovely girl and we had two great children. I had trained at Sandhurst, studied law at Manchester University, been a Chief Executive three times and owned my own business, lived in a perfect house and had plenty of money.
While I had worked hard, everything seemed to fall into my lap. I certainly didn't think much about God and I was pretty sure there wasn't much I couldn't do.
But although things looked great, increasingly I felt as though I was living against the grain.
Then within a two-year period, my business almost failed and my children were extremely ill. Having been both happy and close to my wife, my marriage failed - much of which was my fault.
I remember kneeling down by my bed and asking God for help. I was at my wit's end and right on the edge. I told him I was sorry, that there must be a better way, and that better way must be Him.
This wasn't the first time I had cried out to God for help. When I was close to having my leg amputated following an accident in the Army, I had prayed for recovery. When my daughter nearly died in hospital, my wife and I both begged God not to take her away. God had always answered my prayers. I always forgot about Him afterwards.
Having prayed for help by my bed, once again God was faithful. Things improved dramatically.
Instrumental in the change was a Gideon, David Brown, who gave me a New Testament, which I read every day without fail. I started to go to church, attended an Alpha course and became a Christian.
I didn't forget God this time. I hadn't gone to church as a child but now I can't live without it. My life’s purpose used to focus on my own family and career. Now I'm much happier discovering God's plan for my children and my life. I used to find the Bible boring but now it is essential nourishment.
My children are doing well, my business recovered and several members of my family have become Christians.
I can never thank God enough for helping me. And as for the Gideons, please never underestimate the effect that giving a Bible to someone can have. It’s more powerful than the cure for cancer - it saves lives for eternity.
